The Cancer Information Office, Scarborough Hospital
The Cancer Information Office at Scarborough Hospital is available to cancer patients, their families and carers. The office is in the main entrance of Scarborough Hospital on the right hand side as you walk towards the lifts.
Gemma Kellerman ( pictured above right) and Teresa Hartley (pictured above left) are the front of house for this service and have worked through the COVID pandemic to make sure that anyone who needed the service could contact them by phone or email. The service provides information for all types of cancers with leaflets on all areas of diagnosis, treatments, etc. They are always on hand for you to chat and talk through anything they might be able to help you with. Monday to Friday 9am-4.30pm.
There is also a volunteer that has been with the service a number of years, Keith Taylor. Keith has been through cancer diagnosis/treatment and is happy to chat to patients and families to help in any way he can.
They are all vital in supporting the Citizens Advice Benefits case worker Tracy Jarratt, to make appointments. This is so patients can discuss benefits and other issues that may concern them when they have had a cancer diagnosis. Tracy works for Scarborough and District Citizens Advice but is funded by York Against Cancer to deliver this service. Tracy works Monday to Thursday 9am-4.30pm. The service offers advice and help assisting patients to claim benefits, alongside any grant applications that the patients may be able to access. We are usually a face-to-face and telephone service but at the moment all appointments are by telephone.
Patients have often never had to claim benefits, and often don’t know where to start to find out what they may be entitled to. Patients are given an appointment as quickly as possible, so that they know where they stand with benefits for their individual situation. We work closely with Clinical Nurse Specialists who refer patients into the service. They will also support the patients benefit and grant applications when necessary. Anyone can refer themselves to the service; you don’t need a medical professional to do it for you.
