Awareness day set to go annual after success in 2019
We can now tell you that thanks to the generous people of York and the brilliant band of volunteers who turned out to collect, we raised a fantastic £1,275 at our awareness day in York city centre last month.
Musicians including the Shepherd Group Concert Brass Band and the Stamford Bridge Community Choir pulled the crowds in to St Sampson’s Square in a programme put together by our supporter Ian Surgenor of YAC Promotions.
The Jack Birch Unit attracted interest from youngsters keen to try out their experiment extracting DNA from strawberries and kiwi fruit, while staff from the cancer care centre at York Hospital and from our exercise programme, iCANmove, were on hand to offer advice.
Members of our Cancer Education Awareness Committee also came along to lend their support to the event and we were delighted to see Mary Taylor Lewis of Halifax College, the University of York, which is supporting us for the coming three years.
Mary helped us collect from the public even though she'd broken her arm two days earlier - what a star!
We were so pleased with the success of our event that we are now planning to hold our awareness days annually rather than every other year – watch this space for more.
