We're toasting the success of a fundraising beer that has boosted our cause.

Our manager, Julie Russell, and other members of the team behind R U Taking The P?, the males-only 5K for York cancer care and research, were treated to a specially brewed beer from Treboom Brewery of Shipton-by-Beningbrough.

The beer, a hoppy best bitter, was offered for sale at The Slip Inn and at a beer stall in Bishopthorpe Road during this year’s race and it also went on sale at other pubs in the York area around the time of R U Taking The P? in June.

Treboom has produced a specially brewed beer for several years now because half the race proceeds go towards the prostate cancer research of Professor Norman Maitland at the University of York.

Dr John Lewis, who founded Treboom with his wife Jane, is a former colleague of Prof Maitland, and this year five pence from the sale of every pint has been divided between his research programme and our charity work.

The brewery has also gathered donations from visitors to its base, which are also being given to the RUTTP? fund.

This year’s run has so far raised £13,100, with cash still to come in from sponsorships, and Treboom’s contribution will add £240 to that total.

Julie said the special beer had always been a winner with runners and their supporters. It had helped raise awareness for several years, so it was great that this year drinkers were helping to raise money, too.  “What a delicious way to boost two good causes!” she said.
