Golfers tee up for charity

Golfing enthusiasts are looking forward to a great day of sport in aid of York Against Cancer.
More than 130 golfers are expected to take to the fairways at York Golf Club, Strensall, on July 11, to compete for prizes in an event organised by Club Chairman Ralph Magee.
It’s the latest in a string of Golf Days held at the club to support YAC, and over the years the events have raised around £200,000 for the charity’s work in cancer care, research and education in York, north and east Yorkshire.
All record-breaking 34 places for teams of four have been snapped up by sportsmen and women keen to try their skill in this year’s competition. There is now a waiting list for the first time in the history of the competition.
After a light lunch from 12 noon and a shotgun start at 2pm, competitors can win prizes including for nearest the pin, best team name, best score and more.
Ralph hopes to raise £12,000-£14,000 this year with the help of supporters including city businessmen Scott Anscomb, Managing Director of estate agents Your Move Anscombs; Tim Williams, Chairman of communications experts Cellhire, and Ben Warn of the children’s nursery chain Little Green Rascals.
“We are delighted to have such loyal backing,” said Ralph. “The Golf Day just wouldn’t be the same without them.”
Scott acts as an auctioneer during the two-course celebration dinner that follows the day’s golfing, selling exciting opportunities like the chance to own a racehorse for a day.
He said it would be great to hear from anyone who thought they might be able to offer an auction item for this year’s event.
“York Against Cancer is a charity very close to our hearts,” he said. “One in two people is going to get cancer and most of us are affected by it in some way. The Golf Day is a great event and there is a lot of passion from the people who are involved in it.”
Tim Williams said: “It’s great to be able to support a local charity based in York. We are a locally based company and we appreciate that the charity does really important work in the local area.”
Ben Warn said: The work that YAC do is very close to our hearts and has touched a number of our families in different ways. We’re very proud and felt compelled to support a local charity that does so much for our community.”

As part of the Golf Day he will be giving golfers the chance to try to beat his shot at the par-3 7th hole. Anyone getting closer than him receives a sleeve of golf balls.
