Major milestone for our home to be

It’s all starting to feel very real!

Our move to Monks Cross took a big step forward as a topping-out ceremony was held at the new York Stadium Leisure Complex.

Our general manager Julie Russell joined representatives from all the organisations involved in the project for a rooftop celebration on top of the cinema building, which is the tallest point of the complex and offers amazing views of the entire site.

As well as housing our new HQ and shop, the community stadium and leisure complex will feature an 8,000 all-seat community sports stadium hosting professional football and rugby league games.

New leisure facilities will include a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities and a sports hall with spectator seating. 

A commercial development on the stadium site will also include a cinema complex, with IMAX screen, five restaurants and up to three retail units.

NHS outpatient services will be offered on site from a community hub and there will be a new Explore library.

The new stadium, leisure facilities and the community hub will all open from summer 2019 along with the new cinema and commercial units.

Julie said: “Our current office and shop on North Moor Road in Huntington has done us proud but as the charity has grown we have outgrown it.

“It is time to move into something bigger, and what better place for a local community charity than the new community stadium?   It is a very exciting time for York Against Cancer as we watch our new home being built.”   

Councillor Nigel Ayre, Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism at City of York Council, said: “It is fantastic to see so much happening on site with the works progressing on time and it has been great seeing the whole complex start to take shape.

“This topping out ceremony is another milestone for the project and excitement is really building as we get closer and closer to opening.”

Councillor Ian Gillies, Leader of City of York Council, said: “The York Stadium Leisure Complex will be a welcome asset for the city. It is great to hear that the construction works are going so well.

“When complete, residents will have access to top-class sporting, community and leisure facilities. With new jobs being created and the considerable investment that is being made this will bring significant long lasting economic benefits to the city.”
