Here are our unit drivers

Meet the team bringing treatment closer to you

18th October 2017

This is the fantastic team who are taking our new mobile chemotherapy unit to the roads on your behalf.

Drivers Wally Bacon and Sean Doughty and Philip Bland, Deputy Transport Manager at York NHS Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, are the men who take the unit out and about to sites in Malton, Bridlington, Selby and Scarborough.

The unit is giving chemotherapy treatment to patients who would otherwise have to travel to the main hospitals in York and Scarborough. It’s also relieving pressure on those two main hospital sites.

Wally has already driven vehicles as big as the unit, and Sean and Philip have been trained in HGV driving in order to get behind the wheel. They are all enjoying getting the unit to its sites and say the public are very interested in its work.

“I think it stands out,” said Philip. “People have noticed it, t it is a big presence and there has been a lot of interest.

”When we have been setting up on site, people have been quite keen to have a look and it has  drawn attention. We feel very proud to be driving it.”
