Our team named regional champions in NHS birthday awards
The team that launched Yorkshire’s first mobile chemotherapy unit has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award as part of celebrations for the NHS’s 70th birthday.
Our charity and the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust were named as finalists in the Excellence in Cancer Care category of the NHS70 Parliamentary Awards in a shortlist unveiled today.
The decision means we have won the north region Excellence in Cancer Care award after being nominated by Yorkshire MPs Nigel Adams (Selby), Julian Sturdy (York Outer) and Rachael Maskell (York Central).
Our chairman Professor Steve Leveson will attend a ceremony in the House of Commons on July 4th, when the national winners will be announced.
Steve expressed his pleasure at the news and thanked the MPs for putting forward our work: “On behalf of York Against Cancer I am delighted that we have received this recognition for the hard work of everyone in the organisation and we are most grateful to our MPs for their nomination. The mobile chemotherapy unit has had a significant beneficial impact on cancer care in Yorkshire.”
Our £700,000 unit was launched last summer to bring treatment closer to home for patients in outlying areas including Selby, Scarborough, Malton and Bridlington, who would otherwise travel to the trust’s main hospitals in York or Scarborough. It also ensures capacity at the main hospitals, enhancing the patient experience there.
