The smart money's on York Against Cancer!

Keen quizzers raised more than £300 for us when they pitted their wits against each other in an inter-pub challenge.

A string of pubs in Sherburn in Elmet, South Milford and surrounding areas took part in Elmet Lions’ Inter-Pub Quiz, with teams being asked the same 100 questions in 30 minutes and the winning team answering the most questions in the shortest time.

The event saw Cross Keys, Hillam and The Swan, Sherburn, both answering 89 questions out of 100 within the time limit, and the Cross Keys emerged victorious because they answered their questions more quickly.

The Cross Keys took a trophy for both that and for raising the most money for the charities, ourselves and Candlelighters.

Linda Ellis of Elmet Lions, who is in remission from cancer, presented us with our share of the proceeds – a cheque for £325.

The money was received by Francine Clee, Communications Officer for York Against Cancer. “We’d like to thank everyone for their efforts in raising this money for us,” she said. “It’ll make a real difference to the lives of cancer patients in our area.”

The pubs taking part included: The Cross Keys, Hillam; The Fenton Flyer, Church Fenton; the Plough Inn, Burton Salmon; The Red Bear, Sherburn in Elmet; The Greyhound Inn, Saxton; The Swan, Sherburn; The Swan Hotel, South Milford; The Oddfellows Arms, Sherburn; The Queen O’T’Owd Thatch, South Milford; The Royal British Legion, South Milford and The Wheatsheaf, Sherburn.
