Our General Manager Julie Russell receives the walkers' cheque

Walkers raise thousands for our cause

16th October 2018

Bank staff and their families who took on a gruelling 30-mile walk have handed over thousands of pounds to us.

Kate Metcalfe, who works at Santander Bank, was sponsored to walk the Hambleton Hobble with her mum Pat and her dad Jeff, only months after he underwent treatment for bladder cancer.

The York-based family was joined by Kate’s colleagues Nicola and Sarah, whose father, another bladder cancer survivor, also took part.

Together they raised almost £4,000, which was boosted by their employer Santander, which chipped in £1,000 to bring the total to £4,974.26.

“It was hard, but I did enjoy the day,” said Kate. “I would do it again, and I must have got the walking bug because I’ve been going out with Dad every Monday, doing 10-15 miles each time.  We talk about all sorts of things and I think it has brought us closer together.

“Dad’s doing really well -he is back walking most Wednesdays and Saturdays with his walking group, ‘The Irregulars’, as well as with me on Mondays.”

The fundraisers’ cheque was accepted by York Against Cancer general manager Julie Russell at the bank’s branch in York city centre.

“We’re really impressed by the walkers, not only for their walking but for their success in raising so much money for us,” she said. ”We’d like to thank them for all their hard work, which will really help our charity in its work.”
