Walking back to fitness

Fancy a game of football? If you’re living with cancer you might think taking to the pitch is just a pipe dream - but you might just be wrong, and here at York Against Cancer we want to make it a reality for as many men and women as possible who are recovering from cancer treatment.
Our soon-to-be-neighbours The York City Football Club Foundation organise walking football through the city and we’re joining forces with them to offer free sessions to people who’ve been treated for cancer at York Hospital.
The sessions take place at Burnholme Community Centre, Energise, near Acomb, Huntington Secondary School and the Vale of York Academy in Clifton, on various days of the week.
All running is banned during walking football, and no contact is allowed between players, minimising the risk of pain or injury as you briskly walk your way through matches.
It’s a great, friendly way to start your return to fitness. One player, Paul W, said: “I thought my playing days were over…I cannot stress enough how enjoyable walking football is.”
The sessions are ideal for over-50s but they are very much open to all ages. They usually cost £5 a session but if you’d like to try it out, York Against Cancer can arrange up to five free sessions for you.
Just give us a ring on 01904 764466 or email office@yorkagainstcancer and we’ll take it from there!
