Come Dancing for York Against Cancer

Nicola Gant had breast cancer in 2009 and, although she’s recovered, she knows through experience that not everyone is as lucky. The York branch of homecare service Bluebird Care, where she’s the director, has looked after about 500 people, including terminally ill patients, since it began in 2011.

Finding ways to help fight the disease is a way of life for Nicola and her staff, and their latest fundraiser was a “Come Dancing” event, including a Cha-Cha-Cha lesson for beginners. Attended by 80 people, including an 84-year-old man, it raised £725 for York Against Cancer. 

“My husband Andy is a qualified dance teacher and we thought this would be a bit different. And so many people love Strictly!” said Nicola, 51, who began ballroom dancing after meeting Andy four years ago. Nicola and husband Andy recently handed their cheque to York Against Cancer general manager Julie Russell at the charity’s Huntington headquarters

Nicola is now holding another “Come Dancing” event for York Against Cancer on October 7 at Melodie Park, Wigginton. A beginners’ jive session from 6.30pm-7.30pm will be followed by an evening of dancing to Latin and ballroom music.
