Jane Milligan tackles Great North Run for York Against Cancer

York Against Cancer volunteer Jane Milligan is limbering up for a big challenge on our behalf. Jane, from Poppleton, is joining thousands of other hopefuls in tackling the Great North Run in Newcastle next month.

Jane has volunteered in our hospital shop and has helped out with our events since 2013, becoming involved after her mum used our minibus service to get to and from radiotherapy sessions in Leeds.

Since then Jane has lost her father and some friends to cancer, which has made her even more committed to our cause. “It’s a great charity for local people, and cancer can affect anyone.”

Jane has been running for leisure for around five years, but mostly off-road and this will be her first major running event.

“I hate crowds and road running, so this will a bit of a challenge, with 59,999 other runners!” says Jane, whose training for the event includes hill runs and running seven miles to and from work when her schedule allows.

She’s hoping for a cool day and is looking forward to the crowd support to help get her around the course.

“I’m also looking forward to taking a rest afterwards!” she joked.
