Lions Ladies boost skin cancer fight

A group of charitable York women have boosted the fight against cancer in York.

The York Lions Ladies have raised £900 for us to buy specialist equipment that can help spot skin cancer early.

Their cash will buy GPs in the city a dermatoscope, a powerful lens that can be used to take detailed pictures of blemishes so that doctors can tell if they might be cancerous. 

The Lions Ladies chose to buy a dermatoscope after one of the women, Pauline Rayne, lost her husband Jim to skin cancer. “He had a melanoma, and this might have saved his life,” she said.

The Lions Ladies raised their money with a series of efforts including coffee evenings, a strawberry tea and an event at St Crux Church Hall, Pavement.

We are funding a number of dermatoscopes to get them into surgeries across the Vale of York.

“This is a great gesture by the Lions Ladies,” said Julie Russell, our general manager. “It will make a direct impact in York and we can’t thank them enough.”
