Young musicians inspired by York Against Cancer

Two young musicians from York have used their budding skills to boost our funds.

Rohith and Varun Raman supported York Against Cancer through gathering sponsorship when they entered a talent contest at Strensall Community Hall.

Both keen pianists, they impressed the audience with their renditions of Mozart’s Rondo and Verdi’s La donna e mobile, raising £288.50 for our work in cancer care, research and education.

Rohith, 13, said he and eight-year-old Varun chose to support us because of the impact cancer has, not just on patients but on their relatives, too.

 “Cancer affects the whole family,” he said. “People often don’t get an income when they have cancer.

“I see your shop every time I go to school, and I thought doing this could help the whole community.”

Dad Kalyan said the boys were thinking of repeating their challenge at an event next Easter. “They did this in front of 150-160 people and I was very proud of them,” he said. “I work at York Hospital and I think it’s great that they wanted to support York Against Cancer.”

Julie Russell, our general manager, said: “We’re delighted that the boys wanted to use their talent to support us. Their money will really make a difference, and we hope they go on to great things!”
