Cadets give our charity a big boost

York Against Cancer has been given a whopping £1,100 through the hard work of army cadets throughout York.

Cadets from four detachments in York came together to undertake a mammoth bag-packing session at the Foss Islands Morrison’s, after nominating us as their charity during 2017.

The cadets, all part of B Company (Yorkshire North and West) Army Cadet Force, were delighted at the amount their fundraising realised, said their PR officer, SI McCallion.

“The shoppers were great,” she said. “When people realised who we were raising the money for, they were even more generous. People were putting fivers and tenners in – it was wonderful.”

The money was handed over to our general manager Julie Russell at last month’s York Rocks Against Cancer by Second Lieutenant Johnathan Walshaw, a friend of concert organiser Ian Surgenor.

The cash made the evening an even greater fundraising success, with other cash generated by the event coming to more than £12,000.

“The cadets did brilliantly,” said Julie. “We’re really grateful to them for giving up so much of their free time to raise money for us.”
