We’ve all heard of bar-room philosophers, but York Against Cancer now has its own bar-room scientist!
For one night only, on May 14, you can have a pint with Dr Simon Baker, Senior Research Associate at the Jack Birch Unit at the University of York, and hear how the unit’s working to find ways to recruit the body’s own defences in the war on cancer.
The talk is taking place as part of the Pint of Science event from May 14-16, in which scientists are going into pubs around the country to meet locals and discuss their pioneering work with them in an informal setting.
Simon will be discussing how research funded by York Against Cancer is looking at the bladder, which spends your whole life full of concentrated toxins and has many ways to defend itself.
Some of the enzymes normal cells use to process toxins can also be hijacked by cancers to protect themselves. The new research is examining whether the different ways these enzymes are used by cancer cells gives us a new approach to kill them.
This year researchers in York have found that a particular type of bladder cancer might be most susceptible to this type of therapy and hope to move on to further trials.
