Debbie Byatt with her purple crop

Debbie goes bold and bald for us

22nd January 2019

Meet Debbie Byatt, who has gone bold before she goes bald.

Debbie had her hair dyed a fetching purple in December because she is having it all shaved off on Saturday (January 26) to raise money for York Against Cancer!

Debbie has been inspired to lose her locks after seeing the courage of her mum, Lynda Rutherford, who has lost her hair several times during chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer.

Originally diagnosed in 2003, Lynda had a mastectomy and was cancer-free until 2011 when it returned. She has been undergoing treatment since then, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and drugs.

Lynda also has disabling lymphoedema in her right arm but in spite of her health troubles, says Debbie, her strength , smile and determination is inspirational to everyone around her.

“People say I am brave for shaving my head but my mum’s the brave one,” she said. “She is the bravest person that I have ever known.

“I said the next time she had to lose her hair through chemotherapy I would lose mine too. Mum was initially reluctant for me to do this however she soon accepted it was my choice and quickly requested York Against Cancer as the charity to raise money for.

“She is overwhelmed by the generosity of people and it is amazing how much support we have received.”

So far supporters have pledged more than £2,700 in cash and on Debbie’s JustGiving page, with more anticipated before and on the day itself.

Debbie’s head shave takes place at The Yorkshire Ales pub in Snaith, near Selby, on Saturday January 26. The fun starts at 2pm with attractions including children’s entertainments, and at 3pm Debbie’s hair will be shaved by her hairdresser, Jane from local salon Visions of Hair and Beauty.
