University of York students get behind York Against Cancer

The University of York’s largest college has voted to make us its official charity partner for the next three years.

Halifax College, which has 1,000 resident students and many more living off campus, chose to support us after inviting bids from local and national charities.

Students will now fundraise for York Against Cancer by organising events as well as offering practical volunteering help at charity functions, and we will raise awareness of our services among university students and staff.

Mary Taylor Lewis of the Halifax College Students Association said YAC had been chosen because of the impact it made on the York community through initiatives such as its respite homes and the transport it offered to get cancer patients to and from treatment. “We’re really looking forward to working with them,” she said.

Cath Dickinson, Assistant Head of Halifax College, said: “We’re very excited and proud to support this wonderful local charity who are very  good at finding practical ways to support people affected by cancer.”

Our boss Julie Russell said the partnership was exciting news for the charity. “The students’ fundraising will make a real difference to people in their university city and we’re really grateful that they want to help us,” she said.
