Golfers raise £15,000 for charity

More than 130 golf enthusiasts gathered at York Golf Club, Strensall, for a contest that raised a massive £15,000 for our charity.
The club’s annual Golf Day attracted a record 34 teams of golfers keen to test their mettle while boosting York Against Cancer’s work.
Club Chairman Ralph Magee, who has organised the event for many years, said: “We did really well. With the biggest entry ever we were worried we might have a lot of congestion on the course but we were pleasantly surprised to find it ran like clockwork.”
An all-female team, AFH Wealth Management’s Golden Girls (June George, Christine Hoyles, Christine Ivel and Sandra Robertson), emerged victorious from the competition.
An auction presided over by Scott Anscomb, Managing Director of estate agents Your Move Anscombs, raised £5,000 and the top raffle prize of a magnum of Champagne was won by Trevor and Delia Bailey, a couple who were fittingly celebrating their Diamond Wedding. Trevor is an honorary life member of York Golf Club.
“We had a wonderful day,” said Ralph. “The weather was perfect and the course was in top condition. The dinner that followed the golf was superb – I’d like to thank everybody who made the day such a success.”
Sponsors for the event included York communications experts Cellhire, Your Move Anscombs, the children’s nursery chain Little Green Rascals and York financial planners Grosvenor Wealth.
Julie Russell, our general manager, said: “The Golf Day was once again a huge event for us and the money will make a real difference to people living with cancer in York and around. We are really grateful to Ralph, the golf club and our sponsors for their support.”
Plans are already in hand for next year’s Golf Day, to be held on July 9, 2020.
