Fundraising quiz makes hundreds for our charity

Keen quizzers from across the country came together online to raise hundreds of pounds for us.
Seventeen teams containing a total of 62 people vied for supremacy in the York Against Cancer Fundraising Quiz 2020, tackling brainteasers posed through the video conferencing app Zoom by Dr Andrew Mason of the Jack Birch Unit.
It was a hard-fought contest as the teams identified landmarks from pictures of the view that visitors could enjoy from them, and worked out the names of U.S. states from images of their silhouettes.
Another round challenged the teams to name works of literature from titles that meant their exact opposites, and others tested them on the events of 2020 as well as on music and films.
Dr Mason is an experienced quizmaster but had never conducted an online event through Zoom, and he confessed he had been quite nervous beforehand.
“When we started the wifi went instantly!” he said. “But after that things went pretty smoothly.” The Webster Wisecats (Lisa, Matthew, Judith and John) emerged victorious with 108 points from a possible 138.
They kindly donated their £40 winnings back into the fundraising pot collected through a £10 minimum entrance fee, so that the event raised £380 for the charity’s funds.
“Thanks to everyone who took part in this,” said Julie Russell, General Manager of York Against Cancer. “We’re really grateful for the boost that it will give us and we hope everyone had a great time.”
