Hats off to York Against Cancer

Youngsters at Selby Community Primary School have enjoyed the summer more safely thanks to York Against Cancer. The reception class children were all presented with sunhats as part of the charity’s annual sun awareness campaign targeted at schools in York and the surrounding areas.

The campaign means that every year thousands of schoolchildren in dozens of local schools receive the free hats to help shield them from harmful rays and to get the message across about how important it is to protect yourself against sunshine.

The programme is just one of many practical measures employed by the charity to help local people combat cancer.

“It was great to see the children looking so happy to wear our hats,” said our General Manager Julie Russell. “We hope they have helped them stay safe.”

The youngsters at Selby Community Primary are particularly well protected. In addition to the hats, the school has a sunscreen policy in which staff get parental consent to apply sun cream to their children when they are outside in the summer.

Ian Clennan, Headteacher, commented: "This campaign raises awareness of why sunhats are important and has been a useful discussion for the pupils about staying safe in the sunshine."
