York Against Cancer broke a fundraising record thanks to shoppers at a leading city store.

Customers at John Lewis at the Vangarde Centre, York, were so generous to us that we received the biggest donation the store has ever made to a single charity under its Community Matters scheme.

Under this programme, shoppers are invited to choose a charity to support by dropping tokens into one of three boxes representing three good causes over a three-month period.

During our time as a nominated charity, we attracted enough tokens to give us almost 50 per cent of the public vote – and we received £1,461 of the £3,000 available.

Presenting a cheque to our General Manager Julie Russell, John Lewis York Manager Ben Pearson said: "Community Matters is all about helping smaller local charities that don't get all of the press and funding that some of the larger national charities receive, and we're so pleased John Lewis York can make a difference to the York community." Community Liaison Co-ordinator Aileen Stables added: “Our customers really got behind the charity.”
