Lynette Mills had treatment for breast cancer in early 2018. We took Lynette to Leeds for radiotherapy and she enjoyed a break in our Whitby apartment. “The minibus was fabulous – the drivers were really nice people who put you at your ease,” she told us.
“I made two friends from travelling on the bus, and we meet up regularly now. The apartment in Whitby was so lovely – it was such a nice thing to be able to have a break like that.”
After recovering from treatment, Lynette celebrated first by skydiving from 15,000ft, then taking up cycling.
But not for her a gentle ride around the park – Lynette and family conducted an 833-mile expedition from the source of the Rhine in Switzerland to the Hook of Holland, where it reaches the sea.
Lynette, husband Peter, daughter Lorna, son-in-law Brian and three young grandchildren took on the challenging trip last summer.
“We did it in July during the heatwave and it was very, very hot,” said Lynette. “We stayed in a motorhome and each day one of the adults would drive it to our next stop before cycling back to join the rest of us.
“It was so interesting to travel between the different countries, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, France, Germany and Holland. There were so many fascinating landscapes and the most amazing villages.
“We missed out a couple of stages – one at the beginning because it was such a steep downhill and we were worried about the grandchildren, and a couple that went through industrial areas that didn’t appeal.
“I was never a keen cyclist and I probably should have done more training, but I managed pretty well.
“I wasn’t the fastest, but we did it in 20 days when it is supposed to take 28. Honestly, if I can do it, anybody can!”
