From patient to volunteerSue's a mainstay of our volunteer team
Retired dental nurse Sue Fagg, 70, from Raskelf, is one of our established helpers. She explained what volunteering for us means to her.
"I'd been ill with cancer in 2010, and had radiotherapy and chemotherapy before I had surgery," she said.
"It took me over a year to be well again, but I felt I was really lucky. I had survived, and I wanted to put something back.
"I didn't need to use the services myself, but I knew about York Against Cancer through my oncology nurses and I knew about the Cancer Care Centre at York Hospital. I've been volunteering for YAC for eight years now.
"I started to help on the stall we used to have at the hospital, then in the shop when that opened. I went on to help in the Christmas shops that we have and then started to help in the office with admin and general office tasks. I also help when we have collections.
"I enjoy helping and I like talking to the customers. Everybody you work with is there because they want to be there, so it's a nice atmosphere.
It's a great way to meet people and to help others. too."
